Articles – A, An and The

In English Grammar, Articles are words used before nouns. They help us understand whether we are talking about something general or specific.

There are three articles in English:

  1. A
  2. An
  3. The

A and An are called Indefinite Articles, while The is called the Definite Article.

1. Article “A”

We use A before a singular countable noun when the word begins with a consonant sound.

Examples:

  • a boy
  • a girl
  • a book
  • a pen
  • a teacher
  • a student
  • a car
  • a dog
  • a house
  • a university

Sentences:

  • I saw a boy in the garden.
  • She has a beautiful dress.
  • He is a teacher.
  • I bought a book yesterday.
  • There is a dog outside.

Important Point

We use A according to the sound, not simply according to the first letter.

a university ✔
Because university begins with the sound “yu”, which is a consonant sound.

a European country ✔
Because European begins with the sound “yu”.

2. Article “An”

We use An before a singular countable noun when the word begins with a vowel sound.

Vowel letters are generally a, e, i, o, u.

Examples:

  • an apple
  • an egg
  • an elephant
  • an orange
  • an umbrella
  • an animal
  • an engineer
  • an interesting story

Sentences:

  • I saw an elephant.
  • He is an engineer.
  • She told me an interesting story.

3. A or An – Use According to Sound

The important rule is:

Use A before a consonant sound and An before a vowel sound.
Correct Incorrect
a university an university ❌
a European an European ❌
a useful book an useful book ❌
an hour a hour ❌
an honest man a honest man ❌
an MLA a MLA ❌

Why do we say “an hour”?

The h in hour is silent. The word is pronounced like “our”, which begins with a vowel sound.

Therefore: an hour ✔

Why do we say “an honest man”?

The h in honest is silent.

Therefore: an honest man ✔

Why do we say “an MLA”?

The letter M is pronounced “em”, which begins with a vowel sound.
