What are Parts of Speech?

Definition:

Parts of Speech are the different classes of words in English. Every word in a sentence has a specific function, and based on that function, it belongs to a particular part of speech.

There are 8 Parts of Speech in English grammar.


1. Noun

Definition

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, animal, or idea.

Examples

Person: Rahul, Teacher, Doctor

Place: India, School, Mumbai

Thing: Book, Table, Pen

Animal: Lion, Dog, Elephant

Idea: Honesty, Love, Peace

Example Sentences

1.Rahul is my friend.

2.Mumbai is a big city.

3.The book is on the table.

4.Honesty is the best policy.


2. Pronoun

Definition:

A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun to avoid repetition.

Examples:

I, You, He, She, It, We, They, Me, Him, Her, Us, Them

3. Verb

Definition

A verb is a word that shows an action, occurrence, or state of being.

4. Adjective

Definition

5. Adverb

Definition

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

It tells us:

Where?

How often?

To what extent?

6. Preposition

Definition

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence.

7. Conjunction

Definition

A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses.

Common Conjunctions

And, But, Or, Because, Although, So, Yet

2.I wanted to go, but it was raining.

3.She stayed home because she was ill.



8. Interjection

Definition

An interjection is a word that expresses strong emotion or sudden feeling.

Examples

Wow!, Oh!, Hurrah!, Alas!, Ouch!, Bravo!

Hurrah! We won the match.

Alas! The old man died.
